What Are Flavonoids?

They are the taste and smell of cannabis.

Flavonoids are chemical components that protect the plant from the sun and attract insects for pollination.

Flavonoids are aromatic molecules

By Casper Leitch

Similar to terpenes, flavonoids are aromatic molecules that help give marijuana its taste and smell. These flavonoids occur naturally in many other plants, though the ones contained within marijuana known as cannaflavins have been known to reduce inflammation and are nearly 30 times more powerful than an average dose of aspirin. These flavonoids, like others in its category, pose several health benefits in humans such as anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, as well as the suppression of cancer and allergies. Flavonoids, while primarily found in plants, also appear in some foods and beverages such as red wine which contains similar flavonoids that provide the users with antioxidants. It is a well-known fact that those who consume red wine on a regular basis have a lower risk of heart disease compared to those who do not.

A study in Finland considered the health benefits of 26 different flavonoid antioxidants, while these are not the exact ones contained in cannabis there may be a link in how they function. Antioxidants like those found in cannabis flavonoids are a bodily defense against free radicals which can prevent damage to cells within the body. The antioxidants found in many fruits and vegetables have been known to lower the risk of heart disease and the flavonoids found in cannabis may follow suit.

Many flavonoids have been linked to cancer prevention.

Current studies believe that a dietary intake of them can reduce the risk of tumors forming in the breast, colon, lungs, as well as the prostate and pancreases. It is important to understand that cannabis flavonoids have not been thoroughly researched or studied at this time and there are a vast number of flavonoids that serve different purposes. What is known about cannabis flavonoids is that they are indeed antioxidants. There is definitely a health benefit to their consumption, though what kind of benefits is currently not well known due to the lack of needed studies

There is a long history of antibacterial uses for flavonoids and are known to suppress bacterial infections, researchers working at the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition organization speculate that this is one reason why dietary flavonoids are often associated with a reduced gastric carcinoma risk in women. Several clinical studies suggest that flavonoids could be used in drugs for the treatment of bacterial infection and thus this also opens the door for marijuana being used for the same purpose due to its high flavonoid count. Flavonoids are used to support or treat a large variety of issues ranging from cardiovascular disease and infection to cancer and diarrhea.

While more studies are needed to assess that capabilities of the flavonoids contained in cannabis, it's hard to dispute the usefulness of the flavonoids we’ve already discovered in many common fruits, beverages and other foods as well as their use in many dietary supplements found at many locations throughout the US.
